How to Summarise a Long Text Honestly

A good summary keeps the argument, the qualifications and the order — and says what it left out.

Read the whole text before summarising. Summarising paragraph by paragraph produces a list, not a summary. Read it all, then state the main argument in one sentence of your own.

Keep qualifications. If the original says "in most cases" or "for small businesses", the summary must keep that limit. Dropping a qualification changes the claim.

Preserve order and emphasis. A summary that moves the conclusion to the front, or gives a minor point the most space, misleads even when every sentence is true.

Say what you left out. For important decisions, note that the summary omits detail, examples or counter-arguments, and point the reader to the original.

Use the UMARIX Text Summarizer, which selects sentences from the original in their original order and shows real word counts, so the reduction is verifiable rather than claimed.
